The Birmingham Promise

Financial Overview and Annual Report

The Birmingham Promise was established as a pioneering municipal initiative under the administration of Mayor Randall Woodfin, with a mission to create greater access to postsecondary education and career opportunities for Birmingham City Schools students. In 2020, it was formally incorporated as a tax-exempt, charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our tax identification number is 84-2830568. All contributions, grants, and bequests are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Our work is sustained through the generosity of individual donors, philanthropic partners, corporate sponsors, and support from both the City of Birmingham and the State of Alabama. Together, these partnerships enable us to invest in Birmingham’s future by empowering its young people.

We are deeply committed to financial transparency and responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to us. In our most recent fiscal year, approximately 76% of all expenses were allocated directly to program services — including scholarships, success coaching, and work-based learning experiences that help students succeed in college and career.

To ensure accountability and celebrate our impact, we publish an Annual Report that outlines our progress, highlights student success stories, and demonstrates how your support makes a difference.

The following documents are available for public review:

  • Audited Financial Statements – Prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), offering a detailed view of our financial activities.
  • IRS Form 990 – Our annual federal tax return, which outlines our finances, governance, and operations.
  • IRS Determination Letter – Confirms our 501(c)(3) status and eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions.
  • W-9

Your investment in Birmingham Promise helps create lasting change. Thank you for your continued partnership and belief in the potential of our students.
